Transport in Peru - Peru Bus Companies Information - Travel bybus

Peru bus companies

Buses are the normal form of transport for most Peruvians and many travelers. Fares are relatively cheap. Services are frequent on the major long-distance routes, but buses are of varying quality. Less-traveled and remote rural routes are often served by older, more uncomfortable vehicles, many with inadequate leg-room for taller travelers. Try to avoid seats at the back of the bus, because the ride is bumpier.

The scores of competing Peruvian bus companies have their own offices, and no one company covers the entire country. In some towns, the companies have their offices in one main bus terminal. In many cities, bus companies are clustered around a few city blocks, while elsewhere, the terminals may be scattered all over town. Slowly, Peruvian cities are moving toward having just one long-distance bus terminal.

Buses rarely arrive or depart on time and can be much delayed during the rainy season, particularly in the highlands and the jungle. Especially from January through to April, quoted journey times can double or buses can even be delayed indefinitely because of landslides and bad road conditions.

Local and long-distance buses alike can be a risk to your personal safety, as fatal accidents are not unusual in Peru. Avoid overnight buses, on which muggings and assaults are more likely to occur.

Cruz del Sur Domestic Coverage:

Cruz del Sur serves numerous cities along the north coast of Peru, including Chiclayo, Trujillo, Mancora, Piura and Tumbes. With the exception of Cajamarca, Cruz del Sur does not penetrate inland from the north coast. If you want to travel to inland cities such as Chachapoyas, Moyobamba and Tarapoto, you’ll have to find an alternative company (Movil Tours is the best option).

To the south of Lima, Cruz del Sur heads along the Pan-American Highway to coastal destinations such as Ica, Nazca and Tacna. Southern routes also include Arequipa, Puno and Cusco.

Destinations in the central highlands include Huaraz, Huancayo and Ayacucho.

Cruz del Sur International Coverage:

Cruz del Sur currently has services from Lima to the following international destinations:

Santiago de Chile, Chile

Mendoza, Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Comfort and Bus Classes:

Cruz del Sur is a top-end Peruvian bus company. As such, levels of comfort and standards of service are high in comparison to midrange and budget operators.

Depending upon the class of bus, you will either have a semi-reclining “bed seat” (semi cama) or a more luxurious VIP “sofa-bed seat” that reclines to 160 degrees (known as full cama or sofa cama).

The three standard classes are:

Cruzero Suite: The most luxurious option with VIP seats on both floors and the highest level of onboard service.

Cruzero: VIP sofa cama seats on the first floor, with cheaper and slightly less comfortable semi cama seats on the top floor.

Imperial: Semi cama seats only — the Imperial is a business class option with no VIP seating.

Onboard Services:

All Cruz del Sur bus classes feature the following onboard services:

– onboard attendant (terramoza)

– one or two bathrooms

– meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner depending on length of journey)

– movies (recent releases)

– air conditioning (often too cold, so take some warm clothes onboard)

– individual reading lamps

– bingo (annoying if you’re trying to sleep, but you could win a free ticket)

– The Cruzero Suite option has a few additional extras, including a free newspaper and a pillow and blanket for the journey.

Safety Features:

Many bus companies lack adequate security features, increasing the risk of accidents on Peru’s notoriously dangerous roads. All Cruz del Sur buses have a number of security controls in place, including:

– use of two drivers, with shift changes every four hours

– tachometer-controlled speed limiters

– safety belts on all seats

– regular maintenance

– strict controls to prevent alcohol consumption among crew members

– monitoring of passengers to prevent onboard theft
